Sarah Brahim: Who We Are Out of the Dark

Sarah Brahim, The Gifts, from the series Who We Are Out of the Dark (2014), cyanotype print on cotton, 20.32 x 27.94 cm. Courtesy of the Artist.

A Cyanotype Series “This work was inspired by the theory of epigenetics, which states that the egg that created you was formed inside your mother’s fetus while she was inside your grandmother’s womb. Studies have proven that we biologically and psychologically inherit at least three generations’ backlog of the mental and physical health of our grandmothers, in whose bodies we were initially created.”

Sarah Brahim’s work is rooted in experiences of the body, ranging through full physical embodiment, transcendence, and the unseen body; and she expresses and examines themes of pain, grief, and loss. Through performance, video, photography, textile, installation, and sound, Sarah explores and embraces the vast conditions of the human experience.
